Anyway, seemingly
out of my control the whole thing was agreed – we were
going on a summer holiday to Cornwall all six of us. Having
had very little say in the whole thing to that point, it was
delegated to me and my wallet to come up with a location and
accommodation – thanks guys I thought. So I started
the task of finding somewhere for us all to stay. The first
call was the internet, I searched for holiday cottages, apartments
and hotels. The prices for the week ranged from the extortionate
to the mere sublime.
How on earth could I give the whole family a great holiday
at a great location and in comfort at a reasonable price?
Then I remembered my childhood of caravanning on the East
Coast. My parents at one time owned a static caravan. So
I started the research. The first thing that hit me was
the sheer luxury of static caravans these days. Boy these
things were like luxury pads now. Clearly gone are the days
when you had to fetch the water in a kind of plastic milk
churn from a communal stand pipe. Hey and these things even
have their own toilets these days – no more traipsing
to the dimly lit toilet block in the middle of the night,
even worse was hearing you father peeing in a bucket in
the bedroom. Now you experienced caravan people might be
thinking where has this person been for the last 40 years.
Well the answer is clearly no where near a static caravan.
I then began to look at the location of these static caravans
and the facilities and entertainment on the sites –
all seemed very impressive. The true bonus in all this was
the price. The cost of the holiday was a fraction of the
price of hotels and apartments and to be quite honest the
luxury of these caravans out-performed all I had seen.
I made enquires and the first static caravan site I contacted
was near Perranporth, Cornwall I got lucky, they had had
a cancellation earlier that day. I reserved the booking
and then the next task was to tell the family – “things
were all sorted, oh and by the way, we’re staying
in a caravan”. I really wasn’t sure what the
reaction would be of the kids.
So that evening I gathered the family together and told
them the news. To my surprise they all cheered and said
fantastic. What’s more the whole caravan thing seemed
liked such an adventure to the children. My parents, were
also over the moon. My mother preceded to talk for about
one hour on all the good times she had had in caravans.
Well departure day finally came and all excitedly we made
the journey down to Cornwall. When we got to the site and
the caravan it lived up to all it’s expectations.
All of us had such a great time and the static caravan was
just the best. Anyway, to cut a long story short, we got
hooked on static caravans, so much so that this January
we actually purchased a brand new static caravan. We are
now official caravan fans. Oh and we of course insured our
caravan through Lets Caravan Insurance – ok, ok I
had to give them a plug seeing as they allowed me to tell
my story to the world.
